In the research I did prior to starting this project, I found a blog whose author wrote about this topic, the impact of e-books on the publishing industry. The blog goes on to say that:
" Interestingly enough, the panel said that the industry hadn't thought e-books would catch on very quickly. They also thought e-readers would be used only for non-fiction. They were shocked when disposable fiction became a huge e-book explosion"
It would seem that no one thought that e-books would become so popular. That's why it was such a surprise when they had such a impact on book stores and libraries when they first came out.
But lo and behold, the public ate them up.
People loved the e-book and the business boomed. Suddenly, book publishing industries had a very real, very unexpected problem. How could they compete with a idea that would literally drive them out of business. The answer was simple, come out with their own e-readers. The Nook by Barnes and Noble is a perfect example of a book store fighting fire with fire.
One can only wonder what the future holds for the traditional book, will they eventually all become digitalized or will they make a comeback, people realizing that they still love the paper pages of a book. Only time will tell, and I for one am very interested in seeing what's going to happen.
